![]() Overall, this is an exceptional game which will provide plenty of challenges for grade school age kids. Each one does three or four different things each time you click it. The animation of Sam's mouth doesn't match his dialogue, although that may have been because we were playing on a 24X CDROM drive when the game's minimum requirement is a double speed. There is plenty of attention to detail in the graphics (for example, watch the stars outside Sam's window twinkle every so often a shooting star will go by), and they're bright and engaging. In the graphics department, this game is exceptional. While the puzzles may be easy to an adult, sessions with my official playtester (who was seven at the time) confirmed that they're quite challenging for grade schoolers. There is a certain order in which the various areas should be visited, which is why I think younger children will have trouble with this game preschoolers really need an environment which emphasizes exploration through pointing and clicking, not complex problem solving. Each has a distinct personality, and kids will need to figure out how these denizens of the land of Darkness can help them in their journey. There are also characters to interact with, such as King the mine car and Otto the boat. Each one found goes into Sam's laundry basket, where it is matched with other socks. As a side game, there are socks to look out for along the way. The board then comes in handy later, but what it's used for is up to the player to figure out. In the next screen, he gets some rope, which he can use when he goes back to the previous screen and tries to get the board. ![]() For example, Sam finds a board lying in a stream early in the game. Like any good adventure game, there are items to pick up which the player can use to advance through each screen. Very young children should play this with a parent who can provide assistance along the way.įor older kids, though, this is a game which will really engage them. It's meant for children between the ages of 3 and 8, but I would think this one would be a bit frustrating for the younger ones it's really ideal for kids from 6 to 10, since there is some reading involved. No Need to Hide When It's Dark Outside features some fine animation and sound and a compelling storyline which requires kids to use their problem-solving skills. ![]() The delegates declare peace, and amid the celebration, Sam realizes he missed dinner.Humongous really puts out some great software for kids, and the Pajama Sam series is no exception. Intervening, Sam declares " no food is an island", and helps the delegates to understand that different kinds of food work best together. Sam returns to the Food Pyramid to find the delegates in heated debate, unable to compromise. Sam rescues Bean 47 from a construction site in the Foot Hills (the feet), rescues Pierre le Pain from a boardwalk amusement park at Muscle Beach (the muscular system), collects Chuck Cheddar from a dig site and ski resort (the teeth), and rescues Granny Smythe in the Bluburbs (the gastrointestinal tract). The game features an optional quest to find box tops with which Sam can order his action figure. Sam sets out to rescue the delegates and avoid war. The other four-the dairy foods' cheddar cheese wedge Chuck Cheddar, the fruits' green apple Granny Smythe, the bread and grains' baguette Pierre le Pain, and the meat and proteins' kidney bean Bean 47-are unaccounted for, and General Beetfoot of the vegetables intends to launch a counter-offensive against the snacks and sweets if he realizes the delegates are missing. At the Pyramid, Sam learns that only two of the delegates (Florette, and the snacks and sweets' own Luke Wigglebig, a lollipop who opposes the SSAM) are present for the meeting. He escapes (by using a bonbon and a piece of the bars to get the key) with his cellmate Florette, a broccoli stalk and the vegetables' delegate for a food-group peace conference at the "Food Pyramid". Upon expressing concern that he may spoil his dinner, the SSAM imprison him in a candy cane jail. Sam arrives in the land of snacks and sweets, at a celebration-a play on " political party"-held by the Snacks and Sweets Aggressive Majority Party, a political party that intends for the snacks and sweets to conquer the island (representing Sam's own poor diet). Mop Top Island is analogous to Sam's body locations are based on, and named after, organs and body parts. He is whisked away through his pantry to Mop Top Island, home to the six food groups of the USDA's Food Guide Pyramid. The twentieth box of cookies flee to the pantry of their own accord, and Sam dons his costume and pursues them. ![]() Pajama Sam has eaten nineteen boxes of cookies in a rush to collect box tops to redeem for an action figure of his favorite superhero and namesake, Pajama Man. ![]()
